The daily guide to life in the Triangle

chapel hill Joan Baez, Thea Gilmore Hill Hall, UNC-- Baez was an enormous figure in the folk music scene of the '60s, but hadn't released a truly great album in 15 years prior to last year's Dark Chords on a Big Guitar. But she's clearly kept her finger on the scene's pulse, delivering terrific interpretations on that album of modern contemporaries Gillian Welch, Ryan Adams and our own Caitlin Cary. Gilmore is a musician not to be missed. Her electric folk bristles with energy and a live wire wit comparable to Elvis Costello, with withering double entendres and stunning lyrical set pieces. Despite more than a half-dozen recordings (some only available from her Web site), she's never been to America, so don't miss this chance to see one of the millennium's best new female artists. 8 p.m. 962-1449. --CP
