The Savoyards, a musical theater institution in Durham since 1963, brings a staged concert to Raleigh Little Theatre for the first time. Named for London's Savoy Theatre, where many of Gilbert and Sullivan's shows first appeared, the company is known for adherence to authenticity and tradition. The works of Gilbert and Sullivan are often labeled "light opera" because of the pair's penchant for silliness and sparkling satire rather than heavy drama; however, their musicals of the 1870s still smack of shocking yet hilarious truth today.
Sing Me a Story is a family-friendly concert that employs the story of a mother trying to persuade her kids to sleep. She begins to recreate four Gilbert and Sullivan stories, much to the wonder of the children, and many of the most famous and entertaining Gilbert and Sullivan songs are performed. —Christina Cass
