Duke Ellington Orchestra & NC Symphony

When: Sept. 27-28, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $40-70
The Duke's compositions are so finely woven into the fabric of American culture that even without knowing Ellington's music you might be able to hum "Take the A Train" and "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)." His swing arrangements normalized the spicy gumbo of early jazz just enough to become universally popular long before Jim Crow laws started coming off the books. His is the United States' classical music, something the North Carolina Symphony celebrates when they welcome the Duke Ellington Orchestra to share the Meymandi stage for two nights. —Chris Vitiello
