This rewrite of a 1978 ABC Movie of the Week banks on the scariness of a gaggle of ancient saw-toothed monsters with a craving for children's teeth that terrorize the inhabitants of a cursed mansion. The monsters' main prey is Sally (Bailee Madison), a vulnerable moppet of a child with a mouth full of milky-white chompers and a sad heart. Sally's recent shuffle from her L.A. home to the new digs of her emotionally barren architect father (Guy Pearce) and his wispy girlfriend (Katie Holmes) leaves her the perfect bait for the tooth-hungry fiends. Helmed by comic-book artist Troy Nixey and produced and co-written by cinematic fantasist Guillermo del Toro (whose influence is clear, along with that of Welsh horror writer Arthur Machen), the film depicts Sally's descent into psychological terror. The peril of a child is a familiar conceit for del Toro (Pan's Labryinth) and helps stake out subversive territory that the film, rife with poor CGI, is unable to do much with.
