Donavon Frankenreiter's easygoing acoustic beach rock is a spiritual descendent of Jack Johnson's music. Like Johnson, Frankenreiter used to be a professional surfer, and his free-spirited lifestyle deeply informs the songs. They gambol brightly, almost skipping, full of light, hope and carpe diem. After releasing a more polished pop album (2010's Glow), Frankenreiter returned to basics with this year's spartan, organic Start Livin'. He's just not the type to sound his best all buttoned up, and the album benefits from this loosey-goosey, good-hearted vibrancy. Bret Mosley plays spare blues-roots with a soul undercurrent. He released a strong debut, Light & Blood, in '07. Bag of Toys opens at 8 p.m. —Chris Parker
