Do the Right Thing; She's Gotta Have it

When: Fri., Aug. 24 2012

Red Hook Summer, the latest Brooklyn-set feature from filmmaker and proud Brooklynite Spike Lee, is already in selected theaters across the country. Although it's not here in the Triangle yet (considering how most art-house films take their sweet time coming to these parts, we'll be lucky if it shows up in theaters by the end of the year), the Carolina Theatre is appeasing Lee fans by rounding out its Summer Classics Film Series with a weeklong double feature of his most acclaimed Brooklyn flicks. First off, we have Do the Right Thing, his eternally polarizing 1989 masterwork of escalating racial tension in a Brooklyn neighborhood on a sweltering summer day. This will be followed by his black-and-white 1986 debut, She's Gotta Have It, in which Lee dared to make a movie around a sexually independent, African-American female and the brothas (including Lee's immortal Jordans-wearing B-boy Mars Blackmon) who foolishly thought they could tame her.
