Diana Krall, the best-selling jazz singer of her era, might be even more successful had she not been born north of the border. Her sensuous contralto evokes an icy smooth distance. She doesn't growl like Billie Holiday but rather cuts a graceful figure, seemingly capable of segueing into a triple lutz. Her bulletproof cool is intoxicating. She shifted approaches on last year's Glad Rag Doll, in which she teams with producer T Bone Burnett for surprisingly ramshackle and grimy vaudeville and jazz standards. It feels like the librarian finally shaking loose her hair. —Chris Parker
