Devon Trevarrow Flaherty

When: Mon., April 8, 7 p.m. 2013
Price: Free

Benevolent, the debut novel of Durham author and blogger Devon Trevarrow Flaherty (RealisticChef.wordpress.com), tells of Gabby LeFevre, a "pamphlet-wielding humanitarian" whose life takes on an epic scope from childhood to college and beyond. It's influenced heavily by "the Northwyth legends" and features evil queens, explosions and more. I'm just going to say it: More coming-of-age novels need stuff like this. Estranged parents and soured relationships can only take you so far. —Zack Smith
