For a while there, the preferred muttering pothead rapper was Kid Cudi; then it was Wiz Khalifa. He just might be a superstar at this point, and his new single, "Roll Up," isn't even about smoking, but macking on a girl? I guess that's clever. At least Devin the Dude stays in his lane. Is there a more dependable stoner than Devin? Like clockwork, spring arrives and the Houston jokester shuffles through the Triangle to push another album. This year, it's Fresh Brew, credited to his crew the Coughee Brothaz; it's but one more fine harvest of weed-raps. Along with the Brothaz, Devin is backed by unfortunately named Kentucky conscious rappers CunninLynguists and the brilliantly bizarre Homeboy Sandman, a forever buzzing but still kind of slept-on Queens emcee. Devin's always a joy to see live, but please hot-box early so you don't miss the Sandman. —Brandon Soderberg
