Deerhunter, Casino Vs. Japan, Ducktails

When: Sat., Oct. 9, 9 p.m. 2010
Price: $15-17

Ever since 2005's Cryptograms, Deerhunter (and their various side projects) have been unfailingly reliable purveyors of a sickly sweet type of off-kilter pop music, the sort that doesn't mind dousing a hooky melody in medical-grade ether or spending an entire album alternating between hummable tunes and woozy ambient soundscapes. It helps that the band's leader, Bradford Cox, is the sort of well-schooled music fan whose breadth of knowledge is surpassed only by his ability to synthesize that knowledge into something interesting. Deerhunter's newest album, Halcyon Digest, might be their most straightforward to date, but that accessibility doesn't come at the expense of the group's innate (and alluring) strangeness. Opening is Ducktails, the like-minded, psychedelically inclined solo project of Real Estate guitarist Matthew Mondanile. Also, Casino Vs. Japan. —David Raposa
