Dear Hal Crowther

You write so well! I have copied "Sympathy for the Devils?" (June 28) to my son, who enrolls as a freshman at Duke this fall. I will read the following to him: "If you ever did such a thing, and thought nothing of it, you'd probably be surprised to know that I'd never hire you or vote for you, and that I'd fight like hell to keep you from marrying my daughter. I don't know you at all, son, and frankly you scare me."

Yet, the culture of louts is nowhere more obvious than in the leaders of this country, whatever their stripe or spot, whether on the front lines or in the back room. The villainies of the Borgias pale beside the arrogant elevation of self-righteousness of the band that acts "in God's name."

Keep up the great writing.
