Days of Heaven

Thanks to the lovely layers of powdery white stuff on the ground, a special treat was postponed until Tuesday, Feb. 1 for your viewing pleasure. The Carolina Theatre in Durham will bring Terrence Malick's Days of Heaven to the big, big screen of its Fletcher Hall--a screen that will do suitable justice to the gorgeous cinematography and images that made Malick famous and won his director of photography, Nestor Almendros, an Oscar. Set in the wheat fields of the Texas Panhandle, most of the flaxen-colored scenes were shot during the "magic hour"--a time between day and night, early in the morning and late in the evening--to acheive the effect of a white sky without the sun in the frame. The story, about a young, nomadic couple who work their way into a wealthy farmer's personal life, was also written by Malick. Get some background on why The Thin Red Line received all the hype it did, much as his fourth film The Moviegoer undoubtedly will if it manages to hit its year 2000 release date as planned. See "Special Showings" for details.
