David Carter

When: Sat., May 11, 2 p.m. 2013

I adore pop-up books. My mom adores pop-up books even more than I do. She knows most of the best creators of pop-up books by name, and upon hearing that the Books of Wonder shop in New York had a whole pop-up section, practically began planning a trip. So I'm antsy that she'll be packing her bags for an impromptu visit when she finds out about this David Carter appearance. Carter pop-ups such as One Red Dot and White Noise feature stunningly elaborate abstract 3-D pieces worthy of a museum, with geometric shapes that seem to hover in the air before the reader. His most recent book, Princess Bugs: A Touch-and-Feel Fairy Tale, deals in less heady material (a bug imagines being a princess), but it'll be a great excuse to discover his work for your kids ... or yourself. Just don't let my mom know. —Zack Smith
