D. Charles Speer and the Helix are a country-and-western roadhouse band stationed along some long-forgotten, winding, desolate road that cuts through swamps and empties into the desert. Their weird and busy, funny but focused electric rural boogie comes from a rarely explored juncture of pure country and psychedelic rock, where the parts are precise and the subjects blurred. Led by Dave Shuford, who has spent some time in oddball outposts of his own thanks to stints with The No-Neck Blues Band and Coach Fingers, the Helix is at once blistering and faded, perfectly playing songs that were warped from the outset.
