Curtis Eller's American Circus, Crystal Bright & the Silver Hands

When: Thu., Aug. 15, 10 p.m. 2013

Vaudeville is a frequent descriptor for lively folk music, but it doesn't always apply. Relying on quirky, jerky old-time arrangements and affecting one's voice does not constitute vaudeville. Curtis Eller gets this. His albums and performances actually feel like variety shows, jumping from ragged outlaw ballads to gypsy-inspired ragers, from spectral bluegrass to teary ballads laced with pedal steel. Eller plays each part exuberantly and charms regardless of his role. Opener Crystal Bright & the Silver Hands chase similar ends, but their ideas are sometimes too convoluted to catch on.
