It's the play that dare not speak its name—to some, anyway. Why else would the Chapel Hill News chastely rename Manbites Dog's season opener The Cockfight Play in a recent story? Mike Bartlett's inspired comic tale about three of a perfect pair, which won England's Laurence Olivier Award in 2010 despite its apparently challenging title, fairly crackles with the staccato jazz of verbal conflict.

Of course, it's always good to try new things. Still, central character John becomes the human question mark over these three acts: a gay man—unless he isn't—who keeps vacillating between a breakup he just engineered with longtime boyfriend (named M) and a woman (named W) he's subsequently fallen for. And bedded. And rather enjoyed, it seems.

Except that he wants his boyfriend back—until he's back with W. Decisions, decisions; well, perhaps things will sort themselves out at a dinner party all three are attending...

Phil Watson plays John, the man in question, with Gregor McElvogue and INDY contributor Emma D. Miller serving respectively as the M and W in this irrational equation of human desire. Thursday's opener is pay-what-you-can. —Byron Woods
