Clash of the Breakbeat Titans

When: Sat., Dec. 8, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $5-$8

The breakbeat is a DJ's best friend: The reliable, percussive foundation can serve as the thumping segue between records or work as the drum sample beneath a high-gauge dance track. While Clyde Stubblefield's workout on James Brown's "Funky Drummer" might be the standard, things have, of course, changed. Now, electronic music producers and spinners (more Nguzunguzu, less Mad Decent) are the funky contortionists who churn house, trance, trap, moombahton and whatever else they can conjure into seismic dance mixes, using recognizable breakbeats as the common catalyst. Saturday, Triangle staples DJ SeanEboy and Sound Cartel's Nugz welcome Charlotte's DJ Phatrabbit and others for a cranked-up lesson in digital delirium. Tickets to the 9 p.m. show are $5, or $8 for ages 18-20. —Eric Tullis
