Chinatown

When: Fri., Oct. 19, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $5 ($3.50 for members)

Every dusty, tense shot of Roman Polanski's 1974 mystery Chinatown makes you squirm in your seat a little. And is there a creepier moment in American cinema than when John Huston covers his granddaughter/ daughter's eyes in the film's climactic scene? Jack Nicholson stars as unscrupulous private dick Jake Gittes, with Faye Dunaway as the secretive and tragic Evelyn Mulwray. Their acting is incomparable, and Robert Townes' screenplay is an underappreciated masterstroke, incorporating a lot of silence that allows the undeveloped, arid Los Angeles landscape to become as much of a principal as the actors. N. C. State film studies professor Devin Orgeron introduces the film at 8 p.m. in the musuem's East Building auditorium. Tickets are $5, or $3.50 for museum members, students, and Cinema Inc. and Galaxy Cinema members. —Chris Vitiello
