As the first of 10 roots offerings to hit the American Tobacco lawn thanks to the WUNC-sponsored Back Porch Music on the Lawn, Chatham County Line comes as a major booking coup. The pinnacle of our mighty fine local roots music scene, Chatham County Line is far removed from the no-holds-barred bluegrass act it was a decade ago. These days, they're a band of rockers shedding amps to shred acoustic strings.
CCL still maintains its bluegrass beginnings and rock 'n' roll spirit, Wildwood, to be released by Yep Roc in July, will be the first of the group's five albums to feature drums, while using pop polish and poignant nostalgia to round the edges. Wildwood picks up where 2008's outstanding IV left off, with the quartet using its acoustics to create music unconstrained by traditionalism. Dave Wilson's timeless tunes owe just as much to McCartney, Lennon and Harrison as Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs. Don't miss this free, family-friendly performance. —Spencer Griffith
