When Charlie Chaplin's silent film comedy The Gold Rush premiered in 1925, audiences were so captivated by his classic dancing dinner rolls scene that many theaters were forced to play the scene again as an encore. (Johnny Depp and Robert Downey Jr. are among the many who have since tried to emulate Chaplin's dance with two dinner rolls and forks.) The Gold Rush is a comic story inspired by bleak events—primarily the arduous hike up Chilkoot Pass during the Klondike rush of the late 19th century and 1846's Donner Party tragedy.

During the filming, Chaplin impregnated his original leading lady, 16-year-old Lita Grey. The ensuing turmoil resulted in lengthy delays to this elaborate production, which includes exteriors shot in the Sierra Nevada with 600 extras. Saturday's screening features Chaplin's 1942 rerelease, for which he trimmed some scenes. Most important, this version contains a musical score and narration done by Chaplin himelf. Folks are divided on whether these changes benefited the film. This is being shown as part of the Cinema, Inc. subscription series; $20 memberships for the 12-film series are available at the box office. —Meg Stein
