Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires, Paul & the Tall Trees

When: Sun., April 14, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $20

Given the age and appeal of Charles Bradley's pipes, his production style, and his righteous "The Screaming Eagle of Soul" nickname, it's understandable if you mistake his recent releases as archival reissues. Bradley dabbled with singing back in the '70s, but he drifted across the country after his bandmates entered the Vietnam War. Landing in Brooklyn in the late '90s, he began impersonating James Brown under the name "Black Velvet." These days, his brazen croon comes backed by muscular soul, complete with soaring horns, syrupy backing vocals and irresistible bass. Paul & the Tall Trees open. —Jordan Lawrence
