Chaka Khan made her mark with Prince's "I Feel for You," but it's only Khan's most visible triumph. Her career began with the light funk band Rufus, which rivaled Earth, Wind & Fire in popularity during the early '70s, thanks to Khan's strong R&B vocals. It took a dozen years after 1992's Grammy-winning The Woman I Am for Khan to release ClassiKhan, which indulged her love for jazz and classic vocal pop. Its follow-up, the appropriately titled Funk This, landed her biggest chart success since 1984's I Feel for You. Khan's voice still possesses a heavyweight's punch, with a sultry but mannered delivery recalling Tina Turner. —Chris Parker
