"Celluloid Salesman"

When: Fri., Feb. 17, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $5 ($3.50 for members)

A/V Geek Skip Elsheimer is a national treasure: There, I said it. Continuing its "Mad About Mad Men" film series, the NCMA turns an evening over to Elsheimer, who explores new, ironic areas of the trendy Madison Avenue ethos in a program called "Celluloid Salesman." Culled from his collection of more than 24,000 16mm educational and industrial films, these glimpses into the late 1960s and early 1970s feature a strapping young Peter Jennings expressing his enthusiasm for snowmobiling in "The 'In' In Winter," Arte Johnson and a bra-less Judy Carne in a Laugh-In takeoff to train freezer salesmen at Sears, and a sales pitch for either a Hamilton Beach electric knife or a robotic woman in the baffling "Half-Humanoid Presentation." Joining Elsheimer are N.C. State film studies professors Marsha and Devin Orgeron, whose new book, Learning With the Lights Off, collects essays on the great era of 16mm film. The 8 p.m. screening in the museum's East Building auditorium costs $5, or $3.50 for NCMA, Cinema Inc. or Galaxy Cinema members. —Chris Vitiello
