In the category of Triangle arts organizations that have contributed significantly to the area's cultural development while growing with it, too, PineCone is pre-eminent. Approaching its 30th anniversary, the Piedmont Council of Traditional Music, as it's officially termed, began as a modest means to promote and preserve the state's rich folk heritage as suburbs encroached on the countryside and bled urban centers. In the '80s, the Raleigh-based PineCone often used Raleigh Little Theatre for these shows. As the region's increased population and arts activity has given rise to new venues, PineCone has presented shows in small bars (see their regular bluegrass series at The Busy Bee) and community centers (check their shape-note sings in Cary), as well as massive and luxurious venues, from Koka Booth Amphitheatre to Fletcher Opera Theater.

Fitting their mission, they'll revisit their past today with a fundraiser at their former room of choice. The long-running regional string band troupe Bloomsbury will play an increasingly rare gig, delivering amicable takes of traditionals that, in these parts, are rightfully considered bedrock. PineCone's reach and ambition is ever-expanding, evidenced by a brilliant collection of early string band recordings they're currently building with Old Hat Records. Proceeds from these $50 tickets benefit those aims. The show starts at 7 p.m. —Grayson Currin
