The Beast is up for best Hip-Hop Group/Band at the Carolina Music Awards
Isn't it fair to expect a few marquee names at an awards show claiming to celebrate the Carolinas' contributions to popular music? The Avett Brothers, 9th Wonder, Band of Horses, Scotty McCreery? With that sample speaking to Carolinian influence in both indie and mainstream music, Sunday's show is especially puzzling. The Carolina Music Awards—which tiptoes around the "CMA" acronym for obvious reasons—offers all the red carpet and glitterati trappings of any high-profile awards show, with none of the name recognition. If you really like nü-metal or want to see Darius Rucker honored for—get this—his contributions in the rock world, this is a good way to spend a Sunday evening. Tickets are $21–$31; the event starts at 8 p.m., but so do some decent reruns. —Corbie Hill
