Carolee Schneemann

When: Wed., March 23, 6 p.m. 2011
Price: Free

For decades, performance art pioneer Carolee Schneemann has been pushing buttons with her visual artwork, films, events and writings. She became infamous in the 1960s and 1970s for confrontational work on sexuality and gender that established body art conventions for an entire generation of artists; her 1975 performance Interior Scroll involved her pulling a scroll from her vagina and reading the feminist text written on it. Coincident with her inclusion in the Nasher's exhibition Building the Contemporary Collection: Five Years of Acquisitions, Schneemann will read from the new Duke University Press book Correspondence Course: An Epistolary History of Carolee Schneemann and Her Circle, which Duke University professor of art and visual studies Kristine Stiles edited. Schneemann will also screen four of her films, including the controversial Fuses. Tonight's event starts at 6. Free and open to the public. Chris Vitiello
