Butch Hancock, Dave Wilson

When: Sun., May 13, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $15

Though his Flatlanders bandmates Joe Ely (a dynamic live performer) and Jimmie Dale Gilmore (a distinctive singer) tend to get more of the spotlight, the fuel that feeds the legendary Texas band's fire is the songbook of Butch Hancock. A Lubbock native and longtime Austinite who now lives in deepest West Texas, Hancock is prolific enough to have played a weeklong series of shows featuring only original songs with no repeats. Sometimes the stories get complicated—the adventures of the title characters in the three-part epic "Split & Slide" are like Butch & Sundance on desert peyote—but elsewhere Hancock cuts to the chase with disarming grace, as on his signature ballad "Bluebird": "If I was a highway, I'd stretch alongside you; I'd help you pass byways that had dissatisfied you." And if you need a creed to live by, "Mario y Maria" delivers in spades: "Life if possible, art at any cost." Hancock's solo tours are few and far between; with Dave Wilson of top-flight local quartet Chatham County Line also on the bill, this may well be the acoustic-troubadour show of the year in the Triangle. —Peter Blackstock
