Review retraction time: Last summer, I saw a preview of this film with several other Independent contributors. Afterward, my gut reaction was to give this three stars, but my editor, David Fellerath, wasn't as impressed and convinced me to knock it down to two. Well, by the end of the year, he'd changed his mind and put it on his best-of list, for which I am allowed to mock him, even though he gives me money. [Editor's note: It was a bad year for movies.]
Bridesmaids took a number of people by surprise, becoming a massive box-office hit and getting two Oscar nominations, and it's a strangely relevant flick. More than just fusing R-rated comedy to a female cast, it's one of the few films to examine the socioeconomic divide in modern America, and the need for self-motivation as opposed to romantic fantasy as a way of overcoming setbacks. It still could have been 20 minutes shorter, though. I stand by that. Judge for yourself for a mere $3 at this special screening, which starts at dusk (gates open at 7 p.m.). —Zack Smith
