Brenda Angiel Aerial Dance Company

When: Fri., July 5, 8 p.m. and Sat., July 6, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $12-54

If humans were meant to fly, we'd have been born with wings. This is what my mother told me after I jumped off the roof into the lettuce bed when I was a kid. Argentinian choreographer Brenda Angiel never released that aerial dream. With ropes and complex harnesses, her company dances both on the stage and in the dizzying airspace above it, combining elements of ballet, tango and hip-hop in her 2005 work Air Condition. Throughout, Angiel's choreography is always at the fore, never succumbing to simple acrobatics and stunts. There are other aerial dance companies, but Angiel sets the standard. And if you're staring at the American Dance Festival schedule trying to pick a show to take the kids to, look no further than this one. —Chris Vitiello
