His job reworking busted turntables for All Day Records offered quick inspiration for guitarist Greg Bower when he needed a band name. His group, Turntable Graveyard, honors the handle by crafting '70s-inspired pop-rock with a modern sense of play. Tonight, they open for Katharine Whalen, who could fit most any bill in the right guise. Whalen's catalog includes everything from Delta blues and gypsy jazz to trip-hop beats, torch songs and surf-tinged rock 'n' roll. Her latest effort with Her Fascinators strikes between Americana and indie rock without losing the flair for adventure that has characterized her other projects. Whalen's freewheeling attitude reflects the night's beneficiary, The Blotter, a Triangle nonprofit literary magazine that nurtures and publishes underground writers and artists. It's a mission they've undertaken for more than 100 issues in nine years, with hopefully no end in sight. Pay $5 at 10 p.m. —Ashley Melzer
