Bleeding Hearts, Watershed

When: Sat., June 23 2012

Despite a quarter-century of rocking, Watershed frontman Joe Oestreich is surprisingly employable. He's an English professor at Coastal Carolina University and a contributor to magazines such as Esquire. He recently issued Hitless Wonder, a book dedicated to his band and its quixotic pursuit of the rock 'n' roll dream. The Columbus, Ohio, quartet plays power pop/ punk like the Descendents in their nicest Plimsouls. The songs are well-built, while the shout-along lyricism is appropriately anthemic. Their ninth album, Brick and Mortar, ups the tempo, dispensing with the plaintive emo aspect that once crept in. The Bleeding Hearts share the stage for this 7 p.m. gig. —Chris Parker
