Tennessee native Seth Sutton cut his teeth playing hardcore with Life Trap, but at the front of Useless Eaters, he takes a more varied and holistic approach to punk rock. Useless Eaters evoke The Clash's pub-rock roots, Richard Hell's neurotic New York proto-punk, Devo's stark new wave and the anxiety-stricken garage of Sutton's former collaborator Jay Reatard. They've been prolific, too, pouring out a dozen or so releases since 2008, most of them short-run singles dressed in Sutton's own fittingly fractured collage-art covers. The raw and rowdy Black Zinfandel opens, along with speed-crazy rockabillies Nervous Ticks. —Bryan C. Reed
