The young Raleigh quintet Black Heart Kings makes no attempt to hide its ambition. "Black Heart Kings is one of the most interesting and unique bands of our time," its press materials boast, citing Dave Matthews Band, Rush and the Allman Brothers Band as influences. But the band hasn't let its hyperbolic bio stand alone: The quintet sounds like a chamber-ready cousin to Steve Vai's most new-agey prog-rock slithers, and its frequent bookings show Black Heart Kings is willing to act on its ambitions. This 9:30 p.m. showcase celebrates the band's debut collection of clear tones and winding melodies. —Bryan C. Reed
