"Birds and Bugs"

When: Fri., May 18, 8:15 p.m. 2012
Price: Free

The Durham Cinematheque kicks off its outdoors "Movies in the Park" season with this creature-centric program of films and live music. Tom Whiteside, Cinematheque's curator of the subconscious, matches films and footage you won't see on PBS with standards and original compositions by two Durham groups. The a cappella ensemble Stella kicks off at twilight with a birdlike serenade as the screen flickers to life. Later, Fontana rocks out as insects swarm the projections. Whiteside promises to give fire ants a new dimension. The show's under the stars, so bring a blanket, beverages and, of course, bug spray. It starts at 8:15 p.m.; admission is free, with pass-the-hat donations taken. —Chris Vitiello
