Bill Kirchen & Too Much Fun

When: Thu., Sept. 12, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $15-18
The former firebrand guitarist for Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airman, Bill Kirchen is not only an extraordinary instrumentalist and a wonderfully down-home singer, he's a music historian. Check out his 9-plus-minute live adaption of the Airmen's classic "Hot Rod Lincoln," which traverses music history in "skip" mode: Kirchen segues seamlessly from a few characteristic measures of Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman" to Johnny Rivers' "Secret Agent Man," then on through Buck Owens, Earl Scruggs, Bo Diddley, Deep Purple, the Beatles, the Everlys and even the Sex Pistols. It's appropriate, because his country-tonk/roots/bar rock style knows no boundaries. —Chris Parker
