Bevel Summers, Post-Timey String Band, Pussywillows

When: Wed., July 3, 10 p.m. 2013

Carrboro sextet Bevel Summers' April full-length debut, The Cards, progresses beyond last year's eponymous 7-song EP. On that disc, their palette was limited to bluegrass-folk, and they hadn't yet added female singer Alicia Best. Her crystalline vocals keenly counterpoint Jeb Brinkley's gruff baritone, adding flavor to the band's thickening Americana stew. Not everything is as terrific as the wry existential "Seasick" and the nomadic, '50s-tinged piano-soul tune "Me and Robbie," but the craftsmanship has increased dramatically. On the Post-Timey String Band's parched and twangy self-titled debut, Kelley McLachlan displays vocals that are sere and serene like an orange sunset crossing amber waves of grain: reedy, honest and naturally beautiful. Pussy Willows open. —Chris Parker
