In gettin' down on it

Heavy funk is a super-rare thing around these parts, and I'm not just talking about dusty old singles. What's toughest is being able to hear, see and shake yer thing to the real deal, performed live by the few who kick it out thick and tight.

What you'll get Thursday is all this and more. For starters, there'll be the trademarked screams and yowls of legend Lee Fields, who's lovingly nicknamed "Little J.B." That's not to knock him for standing in the shadow of the Godfather like everyone else with a funky notion. Instead it speaks to the energy he's brought to the game since the early '70s on singles such as my personal favorite, "Funky Screw."

Then come the deep moves of Brooklyn's Sugarman 3, who'll back up Mr. Fields with a sound that tells you saxy, drum-heavy dance music rules. That's the philosophy they wax on new 45s and LPs as the core of the Daptone Records house band behind rising stars such as Sharon Jones. This Thursday, funk's past (Lee), present (Sugarman & company), and future (you) will meet up for the kind of event you won't find around here again for awhile, so snatch up the funk while you can at Go! Studios, Thursday, April 24.
