In indie rock's most wanted

Attention Agents: We need your help in the apprehension of one Britt Daniels. Daniels has been seen in the company of two other individuals, a gang known collectively as Spoon. Daniels is a disturbingly effective singer/guitarist. He has been known to don a staggering array of guises: spiky post-punk; nervy, bubbling, brooding indie-rock; even infectious-yet-not-over-the-top power pop (the kind Rivers Cuomo's been know to kill for). Daniels is difficult to pin down--wherein lies the secret of his steadily increasing following. While Daniels was once in the custody of the foolishly shortsighted Elektra Records, the company let him slip through their fingers, just as Daniels was beginning to realize the breadth of his musical powers. He's since aligned himself with area rebels, Merge, and given his growing cadre a pair of very effective testaments to his pop skills, Girls Can Tell, and his latest, Kill the Moonlight.

Use great caution in his presence as we’ve already lost many to his beguiling pop powers. Daniels often employs a spare, direct attack. Hidden within his confident and smoothly vocalized lyrical musings are a bevy of hooks and pop trap-doors guaranteed to capture the imagination, and the heart. Songs such as the jazzy, bouncing “The Way We Get By” and the spooky, offbeat, rumbling “Paper Tiger” have already attracted a new secret army of adherents.

Daniels is constantly moving; he never seems to try the same stylistic technique twice. Considering his songwriting skills and his penchant to push his craft further with each record, we have no choice but to regard him as one of the underground’s most wanted. Intelligence reports have him at the Cat’s Cradle Saturday, April 12. Call 967-9053. —Chris Parker Use great caution in his presence as we've already lost many to his beguiling pop powers.
