The current iteration of Bearfoot is a likable enough acoustic ensemble, though the band has been through many changes in the past decade. There was magic in the notion of five teenagers from Alaska traveling to Telluride in 2001 and winning that vaunted festival's bluegrass band contest. Bearfoot made a similar impression on North Carolina audiences at Merlefest shortly thereafter, but three of the founding members eventually departed. Fiddler Angela Oudean and multi-instrumentalist Jason Norris moved to Nashville a few years ago and hooked up with Nora Jane Struthers, Todd Grebe and P.J. George in the reconstituted ensemble that made 2011's American Story. Then Struthers and George left; the current lineup includes Megan McCormick, a longtime collaborator. Despite all that upheaval, the current version of Bearfoot likely will appeal to those who first heard the band in Wilkesboro a decade ago. —Peter Blackstock
