Bachelor Mother

When: Sun., May 12, 7 p.m. 2013

Ginger Rogers takes on a rare non-singing, non-dancing role in this classic of the screwball comedy era. Rogers plays a department store girl whose aid of an abandoned child leads to her being mistaken for the child's mother. Further complications ensue when the boss' son (David Niven) takes an interest in her "situation." Dealing with the then-scandalous premise of an unwed mother (albeit indirectly), it's a classic of the genre, directed by Garrison Kanin, writer of such screwball highlights as Born Yesterday, Adam's Rib and Pat and Mike. (He also directed the original Broadway productions of The Diary of Anne Frank and Funny Girl.) The premise is much less risqué today, but the laughs are still there. —Zack Smith
