Bab'Aziz: The Prince Who Contemplated His Soul

Griffith Film Theater, Duke Campus—L'Avventura screenwriter Tonino Guerra helped make this "visual poem of incomparable beauty" from Tunisia. Director Nacer Khemir (Wanderers of the Desert) helms this story of a blind dervish named Bab'Aziz, who, with his granddaughter Ishtar, searches the desert for a great reunion of dervishes' tales told by both Bab'Aziz and other travelers. The effect is like that of a fairy tale, unfolding against the deserts of Tunisia and Iran. The film, which won the Golden Dagger for Best Picture at the 2006 Muscat Film Festival, screens at 7 p.m. The free screening is sponsored by the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and the Program in the Arts of the Moving Image as part of Duke's Screen/Society series. —Zack Smith
