Whenever "alternative" hip-hop artists delve into music other than hip-hop or use non-hip-hop modes of expression to tell their stories, comparisons to Beck seem unavoidable, even if Astronautalis' Andrew Borthwell can spit circles around him. If any irascible, guitar-loving troubadour is a fitting reference point for this genre-nomadic wordsmith, it's actually Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst—and not simply because of a faint vocal similarity. On Astronautalis' new This Is Our Science, Borthwell's earnest and knotty "historical fictions" serve as the perfect middle ground for contributions from Tegan & Sara and Midlake. —David Raposa
