Annuals, Lollipops, Eros & the Eschaton

When: Fri., Jan. 18, 9:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $8-10

At least in Raleigh, people are starting to talk about the scatterbrained presentation and saccharine hooks of Lollipops like it's the next big thing, mentioning frontman Iggy Cosky as the sort who is just zany and prolific enough to get famous. (See also: Ryan Adams.) That's reminiscent of the way folks used to carry on about Annuals, who landed a few buzz-bin hits before letting the ambitions of their own sound get ferried away by the then-nebulous indie rock hype cycle. The takeaway: Slow down, write your songs as you see fit, and move into the market with caution. It's good to see Annuals returning to semi-regular club rotation, as potential is something they've never been lacking. Eros & the Eschaton open with brooding coed rock that's hooky and hazy, bummed out but beautiful.—Grayson Currin
