There's a lot to be said about the faulty-firework career of Annuals, the Raleigh sextet who were, less than five years ago, one of the more red-hot buzz bands in the country. So far, it would seem they've yet to capitalize on the critical fawning for their debut single, "Brother," or the major tours and major-label deal that followed, largely because of a string of unfocused and less-than-compelling releases. But considered geographically and temporally, Annuals deserve a lot of gratitude for being a sort of barrier breaker, an early act that stepped beyond its then-tiny local scene and near the national spotlight. Their ambition—maybe one of the flaws of their sound—galvanized a community of young bands who suddenly saw music as a viable option. The Love Language, the Old Ceremony, Megafaun and more have, to an extent, all followed in their wake. Tonight, two young bands with chances of their own—the spastic and intriguing Oulipo, and the true-to-name Charming Youngsters—open. —Grayson Currin
