Andras Schiff, Piano

When: Fri., Oct. 22, 8 p.m. 2010
Price: $24-52

The image of the passionate classical pianist unfortunately veers toward the flashy: a player racing through intricate keyboard maneuvers. Hungarian pianist András Schiff impresses by not doing that. His restraint in works all over the classical canon, including Haydn and Mozart, demonstrates his tendency to play from the composer's original instructions—allegretto means allegretto, and so on. In this performance, Schiff approaches two Romantic composers to celebrate their bicentennial: Schumann and Mendelssohn. The show starts at 8 p.m., and tickets are $24–$52 or $5 for Duke students. —Chris Toenes
