Adult Spelling Bee

When: Fri., Nov. 1, 6:45 p.m. 2013
Price: $5
;I'm no heavyweight speller, but I have been strutting around as the reigning champion of the Adult Spelling Bee for a solid month. Co-sponsored by UNC-Chapel Hill's Program in the Humanities and Flyleaf Books, this somewhat tongue-in-cheek competition combines variety show with orthography. To dethrone me, come early enough on Friday to sign up in time for a 6:45 p.m. drawing to choose 15 participants. You can also bring a team of three to five spellers for fun word-game matchups between the individual speller rounds. Humanities program director Max Owre, presides over the show, accepting difficult words volunteered by the audience. There's as much laughing as spelling, and adult beverages are available for purchase, as well as the wealth of titles on Flyleaf's shelves. —Chris Vitiello
