AC Grayling

When: Mon., April 1, 7:30 p.m. 2013
Price: Free

Lacking the wit and erudition of Christopher Hitchens, or the pithiness and bite of Sam Harris, the latest by faith-baiter A.C. Grayling is a plod through overgrazed territory. The God Argument: The Case Against Religion and for Humanism rehashes history's greatest-hits collection of arguments for and against the existence of a deity, and it's not really to Grayling's credit that theology takes a beating. Simply stating the obvious, which Grayling accomplishes often (with admirable clarity if not poetry), wins the match 6-0, 6-0, 6-0. The humanism he proffers distills the Western liberal consensus: It's eminently sensible and about as interesting to read as a 5th-grade social studies textbook (even the chapter on "Love, Sex and Drugs" is snoozy). Still, this reading has promise—he's an able summarizer and debater, he has a lovely speaking voice, and while he's here he may elaborate his views on the monolithic "Christian Southern States of the United States." —Marc Maximov
