Deer works in the field of experimental sound, and she will be presenting a thus-far-untitled series of sound collages that mix "music, narration, voices and found sound" to create unique and personal forms of artistic expression. Each piece will be between six to 10 minutes long and together they comprise a far-ranging exploration of deeply personal themes through a variety of sound strategies.
Recently relocated to the Triangle, Deer brings unique experiences to the project: She's got a theater degree from UNC and professional cred from working in public radio, both in the Triangle and in Atlanta where she hosted a weekly cultural program.
Wednesday night's program is the latest offering from the Center for Documentary Studies' invaluable monthly program, Fresh Docs: Works in Progress. As always, the program will be followed by a moderated discussion, and considering the ambitious and experimental nature of Deer's work, it's bound to be an animated one.
Jennifer Deer's program of sound collages will begin at 7 p.m. at the Center for Documentary Studies, 1317 W. Pettigrew St., Durham.
