In My Life

John Lennon may best be known as a quarter of British rock 'n' roll hall-of-famers The Beatles, but few are aware that he was a visual artist in his own right as well. In fact, before becoming one of the legendary "Fab Four," Lennon spent six years at a Liverpool art school, developing his craft as an artist. In My Life, one of the largest collections of Lennon's work, is an anthology of more than 100 paintings, erotic works (many of which were confiscated during gallery shows for being too provocative), drawings for his son Sean and estate pieces signed by wife, Yoko Ono. Created between 1968 and 1980--the year of Lennon's death--the pieces chronicle his life, love and the way he imagined the world around him. In My Life has become one of the highest attended exhibits in the nation, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for charities around the world. Proceeds from the local show will benefit Children's Surgery International, an organization that funds surgical missions in developing countries, for children born with facial deformities.

In My Life will be held Friday, Sept. 6, 5-9 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 7, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 8, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sheraton Chapel Hill Hotel, One Europe Drive, Chapel Hill. A $2 donation is suggested. For directions call 968-4900, for show information call (888) 278-1969. —olufunke moses
