(‘Aa’ila) Family

Nija McKay, a Muslim, wept during an "Adhan" or Islamic call-to-prayer at Duke Chapel at Duke University on Friday, Jan. 16. Hundreds of students and supporters filled the quad in solidarity with Duke's Muslim students as the call to prayer was broadcast from a radio on the chapel steps. After pressure from the evangelist Franklin Graham and other critics on social media, the university canceled plans to broadcast the call from the top of the chapel, citing safety concerns. The chapel has been used for years by Muslim students and is a campus hub for religious and nonreligious events.
